Heerema to trial green shore power for offshore fleet

Heerema Marine Contractors, Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority are to perform a feasibility study on creating a shore power infrastructure for offshore vessels in the Calandkanaal.

The companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Port of Rotterdam for the project, the goal of which is to enable large offshore vessels to be fully powered by green electricity via a 20 mega volt ampere connection while operating inshore and moored at the Calandkanaal.

This would cut nearly all emissions from vessels in the channel, along with a significant reduction in noise, pending the results of the study.

Based in the Calandkanaal, Heerema is a marine contractor with a fleet of vessels capable of performing heavy lift, renewables construction and decommissioning duties. The company plans to convert its vessels ThialfSleipnir and Aegir for the project.

Eneco is a group of renewable energy-focused companies. It will coordinate all feasibility and explorative engineering studies on the shoreside of the connection and act as aggregator to assess potential subcontractors and technology providers.

The three participants in the consortium will pursue additional partners and providers of subsidies and grants to facilitate the feasibility study and are particularly interested in adding partners who are interested in mooring in the Calandkanaal.
