Keep ahead of the curve when it comes to offshore safety

Keep ahead of the curve when it comes to offshore safety

Safety equipment exceeding regulatory requirements remains fit for purpose longer, says Survitec's Ross Johnston

Innovation sits at the heart of all our operations, but it is also crucial across the energy sector. What is best-in class today won’t necessarily remain so forever, so it is imperative as an industry that we continue to look at ways to keep personnel safe when they are working offshore.

Survitec has a history of supporting and leveraging the offshore and marine industry, and its wind-specific proposition and service capability supports has deep seated roots within the offshore energy sector. Key safety products in our range are tailored especially for offshore workers.

Components such as the new back strap and metal buckle for use with a fall arrest harness are designed especially with the safety of offshore workers in mind, both as a pre-emptive and reactive safety solution. As a safety solutions provider with a holistic offering, our offshore kit bags demonstrate our ability to maximise the safety of each person operating on an offshore site, with key safety equipment readily available at their disposal in a secure and compact system.

Not only are safety features a key component of the design process in terms of functionality, but the innovation that drives these capabilities is a key part of the engineering process. Survitec’s offshore safety products are purposefully manufactured using the most advanced fabric and components available.

The 1000 Series Wind Energy suit is designed specifically for offshore wind personnel and provides complete protection for those travelling over water, holding tri-approved status that complies with marine (SOLAS), aviation transportation (ETSO) and constant wear (CE-PPE) regulations. In addition, they provide comfortability and ease of wear for offshore workers which is an added bonus when operating in torrential weather conditions. Further advancements include our Gen 2 Wind tri-approved suit, further proof that Survitec strives towards creating products that are multi-faceted and able to support aviation and marine transit, as well as constant professional usage.

While we offer a number of products for offshore workers, we have an evacuation concept in development that will look to combine a number of these – including liferafts, immersion suits and pyrotechnics – into a single solution so operators can source everything they need in one place rather than making their safety logistics unnecessarily complicated. While there are a number of rescue and survival offerings available on the market, evacuation concepts are less common and we are confident our soon to be launched proposition will change the game.

Rather than simply meeting minimum regulatory requirements, everything we engineer is designed to exceed the latest European aviation and marine standards so that it will remain fit for purpose longer and give operators and users complete confidence in the equipment they put their trust in.

As an industry we must continue to strive towards new and innovative measures that encompass functionality, ease, speed and protection so that offshore energy remains an attractive and viable career choice for future generations.
