Pioneering Spirit completes TurkStream offshore pipelay a month early

Allseas’ Pioneering Spirit, the world’s largest construction vessel, has completed work on the offshore section of the TurkStream pipeline a month ahead of schedule.

Russian president Vladimir Putin and Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the order for the final joint of the pipeline to be welded into place at an event in Istanbul on Monday 19 November.

Construction of the gas pipeline that runs beneath the Black Sea to connect Russia and Turkey is now in the final stage. It is expected to become operational at the end of 2019 with a throughput capacity of 15.75Bn m3per year. The next stage of the TurkStream project will deliver gas to southern and southeastern Europe.

Designed for pipelay in deepwater areas and the installation and dismantling of large oil and gas offshore platforms, Pioneering Spirit measures 477 m in length and 124 m in width. It is owned by Allseas, a Switzerland-headquartered offshore construction and engineering firm.
