The Nautical Institute introduces DP certification for renewables

The Nautical Institute introduces DP certification for renewables

The Nautical Institute, a UK-based international maritime professional organisation, has expanded its dynamic positioning operator (DPO) certification scheme to cover the renewables sector.

The new qualification has been developed in response to an increased need for specialist operators on jack-up barges used to install wind turbines.

Based on the organisation’s established certification scheme, the Self-Elevating Platform (Jack-Up) course uses the same logbook as the DP Offshore Scheme to record time spent on vessels, but includes a separate task section developed in collaboration with renewable-sector employers.

Upon completing the Self-Elevating Platform (Jack-Up) DP training scheme, DPOs will receive a “Restricted to Self-Elevating Platform” DP Certifcate. Successful completion of the course requires that DPOs spend a minimum of 120 days on board a DP-classed vessel and must complete 30 DP operations along with the relevant task sections dictated by the training.

The Nautical Institute’s chief executive Captain John Lloyd FNI said “The continued growth of activity in the renewable energy sector is an important contribution to managing global resources by sustainable means.”

“We are pleased to contribute to the maintenance of high standards in this sector by drawing upon our experience in managing qualifications for DPOs.

“We thank our industry partners for helping us develop this qualification which is tailored to the specific needs of their operations and look forward to continuing our service to the maritime community.”
