Satcoms launched for tugs and OSVs in Asia

IEC Telecom introduced broadband satellite communications for tugs, offshore support vessels and offshore energy contractors. It said Orion Edge+ provides voice and data connectivity to vessels and tugs operating in Asia.

Orion Edge+ delivers reliable broadband with flexible data plans, said IEC vice president for maritime Nabil Ben Soussia.

It uses Thuraya’s Orion IP broadband and Thuraya’s Seastar circuit switched voice terminal. IEC can deliver voice and data services bundled with consumption monitoring tools and controlled welfare applications.

Orion Edge+ is available through monthly plans with no long-term contractual commitments. It is equipped with a bandwidth optimiser tool and connections for a local wifi network for crew to use for operational and welfare requirements.

It enables vessel operators to offer crew access to internet services and social media platforms through a captive portal, while consumption can be managed via vouchers or scratch cards for crew members.

Mr Soussia said Orion Edge+ is an alternative to VSAT for vessels that do not have space for the hardware. “It enables small boats to enjoy the high bandwidth that was previously available only to VSAT users,” he said.

However, if owners want to invest in VSAT, IEC can offer them Thuraya VSAT+ across Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.
